Prioritising Mental Health and Wellness During Wedding Planning: A Feature Weddings Guide for Couples

At Feature Weddings, love is at the centre of all we do. We believe to show love and receive love, it is important to ensure your mental health and wellness are taken care of.

We have had the privilege of supporting countless couples as they navigate the wedding planning journey and have pulled together some practical tips to help you prioritise your mental health and wellbeing during the process.

1. Set Realistic Expectations

Wedding planning can be overwhelming if you set expectations that are too high. It’s easy to get caught up in Pinterest-perfect images, but remember, your wedding day is about celebrating your love, not replicating someone else’s vision. Talk with your partner about what truly matters to both of you, how you would like to reflect your values and make sure your plans reflect that.

While doing this, ensure you set attainable goals and timelines. Don’t overextend yourselves with tasks that aren’t necessary – your day is about you two and your love, not perfection.

2. Celebrate Your Culture

Integrating cultural traditions into your wedding is not only a way to honour your heritage but also a powerful tool to nurture your mental wellbeing during the planning process.

Many cultures place a strong emphasis on community, support, and connection, values that can be deeply grounding during a time that might feel overwhelming. Weddings offer a chance to lean on those around you, share wisdom, and receive emotional support. Embrace those traditions that encourage togetherness and collective celebration. Whether it’s a traditional family gathering, a group blessing, or a shared meal, these rituals can provide moments of calm and reassurance amidst the hustle of wedding planning.

Additionally, honoring your culture might help you reconnect with your roots and find comfort in practices that have long been part of your family’s history. By celebrating your cultural identity on your wedding day, you’re not only creating a meaningful and memorable experience but also fostering a sense of pride, connection, and mental balance.

3. Communicate Openly with Your Partner

Planning a wedding can test any relationship, so clear and honest communication with your partner is vital. If one of you is feeling stressed or overwhelmed, it’s important to speak up early on. Wedding planning should be a shared experience, not a burden placed on one person’s shoulders.

When you divide the responsibilities and keep communication open, it can help prevent misunderstandings and unnecessary tension.

Don’t hesitate to lean on each other when challenges arise. Be each other’s biggest supporters – you are teammates, lovers and best friends after all!

4. Take Breaks from Planning

Wedding planning can easily consume every moment of your time, but it’s essential to take breaks. Don’t feel guilty about stepping away from it for a while. If you don’t reply to an email straight away, we get it! You need balance and perspective.

Enjoy date nights, take a walk, or spend time with friends and family. It’s important to disconnect from the stress of planning to focus on your mental and emotional health and to continue to grow as a couple. Remember, this time should still be about strengthening your bond as a couple before the big day.

5. Prioritise Self-Care

While the focus is often on the logistics of the wedding day, don’t forget to take care of yourselves. Exercise, eat well, get enough sleep, and take moments for relaxation. Mental health and physical wellness go together. Whether it’s going for a swim or enjoying a relaxing evening with a movie, make sure you have time to recharge and keep your mind at ease.

Some couples find it helpful to practice mindfulness or meditation during the wedding planning process. Taking a few minutes each day to relax, breathe, and focus on the present moment can be incredibly beneficial for your mental health.

6. Delegate and Ask for Help

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your friends, family, and us, your wedding vendors are there to support you. Trust us to take on some of the tasks you may be struggling with. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, delegate responsibilities to people you trust.

Whether it’s having a friend help you choose flowers or allowing your wedding planner to handle the details, there’s no need to do it all by yourself.

Everyone will want to be there for you as a couple to ensure you are as happy as can be. At Feature, we have a wedding concierge service, to elevate a lot of this pressure, that you can find out about here.

7. Let Go of Perfection

Perfection is a myth. The best weddings are ones where the couple feels comfortable and happy, not necessarily the ones that go off without a hitch.

Small hiccups may occur, and that’s totally fine. The goal is to celebrate love, not stress over the details. As your wedding photographers and videographers, we have witnessed how the most unforgettable moments come from the unexpected happenings, genuine laughter, spontaneous dances, or a shared cute look between the couple that says everything. Those are the moments that matter.

If something doesn’t go exactly as planned, remember to take a step back, breathe, and keep the bigger picture in mind.

8. Embrace the Journey, Not Just the Day

Remember that your wedding day is just one moment in a lifetime together. Enjoy the journey of planning. Celebrate each step, no matter how small. Take time to reflect on how far you’ve come as a couple. Yes, there may be bumps along the way, but the love, joy, and memories you create during this time will stay with you long after the wedding.

The wedding day itself will fly by in a whirlwind, but the process of coming together, making decisions, and celebrating your love with your family and friends is what truly matters.
