We’ve shot at almost every location in this guide — many of them dozens of times. This isn’t a generic list scraped from the internet. It’s the guide we actually hand to our couples. 1. Cityscape & Urban Melbourne :
Grunge, grandeur, and that unmistakable Melbourne energy.
Melbourne’s urban landscape is arguably the most diverse of any Australian city. In a 20-minute walk through the CBD you can go from raw laneway graffiti to UNESCO World Heritage gardens to sweeping Yarra River views. For couples who want an editorial, fashion-forward feel — this is your playground.
Hosier Lane
Melbourne’s most iconic laneway and probably the most photographed wall in Australia. Ever-changing layers of street art, graffiti, and raw urban texture create an electric backdrop for couples who want bold, creative energy in their portraits.
Photographer’s note: Best before 9am on weekdays to avoid crowds. The light in the early morning is incredible — soft and even, bouncing off the cobblestones. On a wedding day, factor in 20–30 minutes here maximum.
State Library of Victoria
Regal sandstone columns, grand heritage architecture, and that timeless old-Melbourne feel. The exterior of the State Library is one of the most underrated city portrait locations — and it doubles as a wet weather backup thanks to the covered colonnades.
Photographer’s note: No permit required for photography on the exterior. Works beautifully at any time of day.
Old Treasury Building & Treasury Place
One of the most beloved wedding portrait locations in Melbourne — and for good reason. The 1850s cream-coloured stonework, sweeping stairs, and the quiet laneways surrounding Treasury Place create a range of compositions from grand and formal to intimate and moody.
Photographer’s note: The streets immediately surrounding the building are often overlooked but are some of the most beautiful. Soft, directional light bounces off the stone — especially in the late afternoon. No permit required for exterior photography.
Flinders Street Station & Princes Bridge
French Renaissance architecture, an instantly recognisable facade, and the Yarra River right next to it — Flinders Street Station is a Melbourne icon. Princes Bridge offers panoramic city skyline views that are particularly stunning at golden hour.
Photographer’s note: Crowds are the main challenge. Best in the early morning or after dusk when the city lights create a soft, romantic glow on the river. Night portraits here with flash can be exceptional.
Southbank Promenade
Melbourne’s riverside promenade offers a polished, contemporary backdrop — city skyline reflections on the Yarra, modern architecture, and that expansive open-sky feeling. Works especially well at sunset when the golden light bounces off the water.
Collins Street & Melbourne CBD Laneways
Collins Street’s mix of heritage sandstone and modern boutique facades — including the architectural wall of the Chanel store on Flinders Lane — offers a high-fashion editorial feel unlike anywhere else in the city. The Carlton laneways just north of the CBD are quieter, with elegant stonework and softer, more diffused light.
Carlton Gardens & Royal Exhibition Building
A UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ornate Victorian architecture of the Royal Exhibition Building, surrounded by 26 hectares of formal gardens, is one of Melbourne’s most iconic and versatile wedding portrait locations. Works for both large bridal parties and intimate couple portraits.
Photographer’s note: The fountain and tree-lined pathways are beautiful at most times of day. Check Museum Victoria’s event schedule before your wedding date — major events at the Melbourne Museum can affect parking and foot traffic.
2. Gardens & Romantic Nature
Lush, layered, and full of light — perfect for romantic editorial portraits.
Melbourne’s gardens are extraordinary. From the world-class Royal Botanic Gardens to the hidden rose gardens of St Kilda, these locations offer a softness and timelessness that few other settings can match.
Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne
Melbourne’s crown jewel and arguably the most beautiful garden in Australia for wedding photography. Water reflections, towering ancient trees, ornamental lakes, and endless romantic compositions — every corner of these gardens offers something different.
Photographer’s note: Best at sunrise to avoid tourists and joggers. The Ornamental Lake is exceptional in early morning light. A photography permit is required (~$200) — book well in advance as dates fill up quickly.
Fitzroy Gardens
Winding elm-tree avenues, archways, and that distinctive old-European garden charm right in the heart of East Melbourne. The Conservatory adds a beautiful tropical option, available outside public opening hours (9am–5:30pm) by permit.
Photographer’s note: Permit required through the City of Melbourne. These gardens are popular on weekends — early morning is significantly quieter. The elm tunnel in autumn is extraordinary. ☂The Conservatory is a fantastic wet weather option with exclusive permit access.
Treasury Gardens
:Just across from Fitzroy Gardens, Treasury Gardens often gets overlooked — which is exactly why we love it. Tall, mature English elms create a stunning natural canopy with the Treasury Building precinct providing a beautiful city backdrop. One of Victoria’s oldest public gardens.
Photographer’s note:No permit required for photography. Best in spring and autumn when the foliage colour is at its peak.
Rippon Lea Estate
Heritage home meets garden elegance. Seven hectares of Victorian landscape gardens, a tranquil ornamental lake, a heritage manor house, and beautifully maintained lawns — Rippon Lea offers an editorial luxury feel just 10km from the CBD. This is a National Trust property (more on that below).
Alowyn Gardens
A privately owned garden about an hour from Melbourne that feels like a secret. Lush archways, wildflower borders, autumn leaves, and winding paths through intimate garden rooms. If you want something that photographs like a private European estate — this is it.
Photographer’s note: Best in autumn (April–May) and spring (October–November). Bookings and fees required through the garden directly.
St Kilda Botanical Garden
An underrated gem for couples with receptions or ceremonies on the Bayside. Rose garden, Rainman Fountain, a beautiful ornamental pond, conservatory, and a stunning palm-lined entrance path. Far less crowded than the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Photographer’s note: $100 photography permit required. The conservatory makes this a strong wet weather option with exclusive access.
3. National Trust Venues — Heritage Grandeur
Victoria’s most historic and storied locations — where history becomes part of your love story. At Feature Weddings, we have a deep love for locations soaked in history. Victorian heritage buildings create extraordinary backdrops — particularly for multicultural weddings, where the layering of family traditions against centuries of architecture is genuinely magic. National Trust Victoria manages some of the most breathtaking heritage properties in the state. Each one comes with its own story, its own character, and its own photographic possibilities.

Rippon Lea Estate — Elsternwick ⭐ Feature Favourite
One of Australia’s grandest suburban estates and one of the last surviving grand Victorian estates in the country. Seven hectares of breathtaking gardens surround a magnificent 33-room mansion built in 1868 for Frederick Sargood. Sweeping lawns, an ornamental lake, fernery, and heritage orchard — it’s endlessly photographic.
Photographer’s note: We photograph weddings here multiple times a year. The variety of locations within the estate means a couple can spend an entire hour here without running out of compositions. The lake at golden hour is breathtaking.
Labassa — Caulfield North ⭐ Feature Favourite
A Victorian-era mansion of extraordinary ornate detail — intricate plasterwork ceilings, soaring decorative columns, mosaic floors, and a grand central staircase that is quite simply unmatched for wedding portraits anywhere in Melbourne. If you want something genuinely opulent and unlike any other location in the city, this is it.
Photographer’s note: Photography permit is approximately $800 per hour — and it is worth every cent. The images you get here are in a category of their own. Enquire with the National Trust well in advance.
Como House and Garden — South Yarra
A grand Italianate mansion set in formal heritage gardens just 4km from the CBD. Beautiful ornate interiors, a graceful verandah, and manicured grounds that have an almost French estate quality. The ballroom and surrounding gardens work beautifully together.
Tasma Terrace — CBD
An elegant 1878 terrace row in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD — bluestone columns, ironwork lace balconies, and a beautiful cobblestone courtyard. More intimate than some of the other National Trust properties, but with extraordinary detail and character.
La Trobe’s Cottage — Kings Domain
The original home of Victoria’s first Lt. Governor, Charles La Trobe, dating from 1839. Set within the lush Kings Domain gardens, this small pre-gold-rush settler’s cottage is one of the most historically significant buildings in Victoria — intimate, unique, and deeply characterful.
Polly Woodside — Southbank
A fully restored 19th-century sailing ship moored on the Yarra River. Dramatic, cinematic, and completely unlike anything else available for wedding photography in Melbourne. Industrial maritime character with the city skyline as your backdrop.
Photographer’s note: Exceptional for couples wanting something truly different. Particularly striking at dusk.
Old Melbourne Gaol — CBD
Bluestone walls, iron bars, and Victorian Gothic architecture in the heart of the city. For couples who want portraits that are dramatic, moody, and deeply atmospheric — the Gaol is unlike anywhere else. Its dark romance is genuinely powerful.
Werribee Mansion (Parks Victoria)
A grand Italianate estate just west of Melbourne, managed through Parks Victoria. Sweeping formal gardens, a magnificent manor house, and exclusive timeslot bookings for the grand staircase and main hallway. Parks Victoria permit required — allow 8 weeks minimum lead time.
4. Beach & Coastal Melbourne
Light, space, and that breathtaking open-sky feel. Melbourne’s coastline stretches from Port Melbourne down through the bayside suburbs to the Mornington Peninsula — and there’s enormous variety in what it offers photographically.
Half Moon Bay — Black Rock
Golden Silurian sandstone cliffs, bobbing boats in a small marina, and gentle turquoise waves. Half Moon Bay is one of the most elegant and minimal coastal portrait locations in Melbourne — a palette of gold, cream, and blue that photographs beautifully with both soft and dramatic light.
Photographer’s note: Best in the late afternoon when the cliffs catch warm light. Park at the Black Rock end and walk down for the best compositions.
Brighton Beach Boxes
Melbourne’s most iconic coastal landmark — a row of colourful bathing boxes along an immaculate stretch of bayside beach. Works beautifully for playful, vibrant portraits and those candid in-between moments. Particularly popular for engagement shoots.
Photographer’s note: The boxes are privately owned and early morning is the quietest time. A fee applies for photography access — check the Brighton Bathing Box Association for current rates.
St Kilda Pier & Breakwater
The city skyline as backdrop, a long wooden boardwalk, and sunset silhouettes over Port Phillip Bay. St Kilda Pier is a Melbourne wedding photography classic for a reason — it delivers consistently stunning images across almost all light conditions.
Photographer’s note: The breakwater (the rocky wall at the end of the pier) is less crowded and offers beautiful textured compositions. Watch for the little penguins at dusk!
Williamstown Foreshore & Ferguson St Pier
Harbour vibes, historical waterfront architecture, and a uniquely Melbourne maritime character. Ferguson St Pier has a retired cruiser moored nearby that adds an extraordinary nautical backdrop unlike anywhere else in the city.
Photographer’s note: One of our favourite less-obvious coastal locations. Far fewer crowds than Brighton or St Kilda, and the late-afternoon light on the water here is exceptional.
Princes Pier — Port Melbourne
580 metres of original wooden pylons extending into Port Phillip Bay — dramatic, industrial, and architecturally stunning. Best at golden hour when the light turns the old timber warm and the bay reflects the sky.
Photographer’s note: No shelter available. If rain is in the forecast, have a backup plan ready. Can be windy — coordinate with your couple around hair and dress considerations.
5. Landscape & Scenic Nature
For the couples who want something wild, moody, and completely unforgettable. Beyond Melbourne’s suburbs, Victoria’s natural landscape offers some of the most dramatic and cinematic portrait locations in Australia. These locations require more travel time but deliver images that are genuinely extraordinary.
Dandenong Ranges
Ancient mountain ash forests, fern-covered gullies, mossy trunks, and filtered dappled light. The Dandenong Ranges are just 35km east of Melbourne but feel a world away — deeply immersive, moody, and cinematic. Perfect for couples who want portraits that feel like a scene from a film.
Photographer’s note: Parks Victoria permit required for commercial photography. Allow 45 minutes travel from the CBD. The Kokoda Track in Ferntree Gully is a hidden gem within the ranges.
Black Spur Drive — Healesville
A single stretch of road through towering mountain ash trees — some of the tallest flowering trees in the world. The Black Spur is genuinely one of the most photographed natural landscapes in Victoria, and for good reason. One frame here stops you in your tracks.
strong>Photographer’s note: Best at sunrise in the mist — when low cloud drifts through the canopy it creates something almost supernatural. Allow 1 hour travel from Melbourne CBD.
You Yangs Regional Park
Volcanic granite tors rising from the plains southwest of Melbourne. Rugged red-earth textures, sweeping panoramic views, and a genuinely otherworldly landscape that you won’t find anywhere else near Melbourne.
Photographer’s note: Parks Victoria permit required. Best in the golden hour when the warm light picks up the texture of the rock formations. Allow 50 minutes from the CBD.
Mount Macedon / Hanging Rock Region
Eucalyptus forest, misty mornings, earthy tones, and the dramatic geological formations of Hanging Rock itself. One of Victoria’s most atmospheric natural landscapes — raw, romantic, and deeply evocative.
Photographer’s note:
Parks Victoria permit required for Hanging Rock. The surrounding Mount Macedon region offers beautiful alternatives including the Memorial Cross and private gardens. Allow 1 hour from Melbourne CBD.
6. Premium & Paid Locations
Exclusive access, curated settings, and that extra layer of luxury. Some of Melbourne’s best portrait locations require a booking and a fee — but the exclusivity and visual quality they deliver make them well worth the investment.
Mont Du Soleil — Kallista
Tuscany without the airfare. This privately owned property in the Dandenong Ranges features stone walls, cypress trees, rolling vineyard views, and a European estate aesthetic that is completely unique in Victoria. One of the most in-demand portrait locations in the state.
Photographer’s note: Bookings fill quickly — particularly in autumn and spring. Fees vary by session length. Contact Mont Du Soleil directly for current availability and pricing.
Camp David Farm — Spring Hill
Rolling lavender fields, white timber fences, open farmland, and a romantic countryside palette. Best in November–December when the lavender is in full bloom — at peak season, the fields are absolutely breathtaking.
The Terrace at Royal Botanic Gardens
A licensed wedding photography location within the Royal Botanic Gardens offering a more exclusive and formal garden setting. Refined elegance with exclusive use of a curated section of Melbourne’s most iconic gardens.
Butler Lane by Peter Rowland
Industrial chic in its most refined form — exposed brick, trailing ivy walls, and beautifully textured architectural lines in a private laneway setting. Perfect for couples wanting a modern, editorial session in a premium controlled environment.
Melbourne University Quadrangle
Gothic sandstone cloisters, majestic arches, and an intimate courtyard that feels entirely European. One of the most beautiful architectural settings in Melbourne — and it also works beautifully as a wet weather option.

7. Wet Weather Backup Locations — Melbourne’s Best Undercover Spots
Because Melbourne weather is famously, beautifully unpredictable. Here’s the truth: some of our most cinematic work has been shot in the rain. A moody sky, wet cobblestones reflecting city lights, and a couple who decides to embrace it rather than panic — that makes for extraordinary images. But if you’d rather stay dry, here are our go-to undercover locations — all with serious atmosphere.
Fitzroy Town Hall ⭐ Our #1 Pick
Our personal favourite wet weather location. Three completely independent covered sections, each with a different architectural feel, and it’s almost always quiet — no competing bridal parties, no waiting. Beautiful columns, heritage detail, and soft natural light.
Photographer’s note: Located in Johnston Street Fitzroy. Free parking available nearby. This is genuinely the first place we suggest when rain is on the forecast.
Parliament House
Melbourne’s most well-known wet weather location. Grand Neo-classical columns, marble floors, and elegant covered colonnades on Spring Street. Unquestionably beautiful — but it’s popular, so arrive early and be prepared to share the space.
Northcote Town Hall
The same beautiful heritage column aesthetic as Fitzroy Town Hall but with significantly less foot traffic. A quieter, calmer alternative that delivers the same quality of image.
Old Treasury Building
Covered porticos and undercover corridors surround the building’s perimeter. The Treasury Place walkway is particularly beautiful in moody overcast light — the cream stonework glows even without direct sunlight.
State Library of Victoria
Central, iconic, and always available. The exterior colonnades along Swanston Street provide solid shelter and one of Melbourne’s most recognisable architectural backdrops.
Crown Casino Grand Staircase
Opulent, dramatic, and absolutely showstopping. The sweeping grand staircase inside Crown is a genuine luxury portrait location. Expect some public foot traffic — patience is required — but the images are exceptional.
Royal Botanic Gardens Conservatory
A permit-required hidden gem. Exclusive use of a lush tropical glasshouse filled with rare plants — portraits here have a completely unique warmth and texture. Available through the City of Melbourne permits office.
Fitzroy & Collingwood Laneways
The inner north’s network of laneways offers countless covered doorways, archways, textured brick walls, and overhung alcoves. This is our most flexible wet weather option — endlessly creative and always uncrowded.
Wurundjeri Way Underpass — Docklands
One of Melbourne’s best-kept wet weather secrets. A large undercover space with beautiful architectural curves, vanishing perspective lines, and dramatic concrete geometry. Surprisingly beautiful — and we’re rarely not the only ones there.
Melbourne University Quadrangle
Gothic sandstone cloisters that feel like Oxford. Completely covered, architecturally extraordinary, and a genuine wet weather venue in its own right. Permit required — worth organising in advance as part of your photography planning.
How We Plan Your Location Session
At Feature Weddings, choosing locations isn’t something we leave to chance. When you book with us, we work through a location planning session as part of your pre-wedding process. We’ll consider:-
Your Vibe are you romantic and classic, or bold and editorial? Garden or laneway? Heritage or minimal?
Your Timeline how much time do you have between ceremony and reception? We’ll plan a realistic route, not an aspirational one.
The Season and Light golden hour in December is 8:30pm. In June it’s 5:15pm. That changes everything about where we shoot.
Your Outfits colour palettes that complement your location choices make a significant difference to the final images.
